Read With Us: Across the Globe in 6 Months

We are currently running a six month Read Along on our Facebook page. We began in February and will be reading through the month of July. The following are the book titles by the month’s we’ll read them.

February - Older Brother by Mahir Guven.

Older Brother is the poignant story of a Franco-Syrian family whose father and two sons try to integrate themselves into a society that doesn't offer them many opportunities. Mahir Guven alternates between an ironic take on contemporary society and the gravity of terrorist threats. He explores with equal poignancy the lives of "Uberized" workers and actors in the global jihad.

March - The Break by Katherena Vermette

The Break is a stunning and heartbreaking debut novel about a multigenerational Métis-Anishinaabe family dealing with the fallout of a shocking crime in Winnipeg’s North End.

April - How to Pronounce Knife by Souvankham Thammavongsa

Told with compassion and wry humour, these stories honour characters struggling to find their bearings far from home, even as they do the necessary "grunt work of the world”.

May - Hiding in Plain Sight by Nuruddin Farrah

Nuruddin Farah writes a provocative, unforgettable tale about family, freedom, and loyalty. A departure in theme and setting, Hiding in Plain Sight is a profound exploration of the tensions between liberty and obligation, the ways in which gender and sexual orientation define us, and the unintended consequences of the secrets we keep.

June - We Have Always Been Here by Samra Habib

An exploration of faith, art, love, and queer sexuality, a journey that takes Samra Habib (an Ahmadi Muslim who grew up in Pakistan then came to Canada as a refugee) to the far reaches of the globe to uncover a truth that was within her all along.

July - The Skin We’re In by Desmond Cole

A bracing, provocative, and perspective-shifting book from one of Canada's most celebrated and uncompromising writers, Desmond Cole. Cole creates a comprehensive picture of entrenched, systemic inequality. Urgent, controversial, and unsparingly honest, The Skin We’re In is destined to become a vital text for anti-racist and social justice movements in Canada, as well as a potent antidote to the all-too-present complacency of many white Canadians.
