Reading with Purpose: What Héctor Bellerín Reminds Us About Literature

I came across a story recently that made me smile. It was about Héctor Bellerín, the Arsenal footballer, talking about how literature completely changed his life.

During the lockdowns, when life slowed down and everything felt uncertain, Bellerín turned to books. At first, it was just something to do. But as he read more, he started seeing the world (and himself) differently. Reading became both comfort and growth.

That story really stuck with me because it’s the heart of what I call intentional reading—being mindful of what you read, why you’re reading it, and what it adds to your life. It’s not about reading only “serious” books. Pleasure is part of it too! Sometimes the most intentional choice is the story that makes you laugh, helps you rest, or reconnects you with joy.

At Tusome Books, I think a lot about choosing books that entertain and also expand how we see the world. When we talk about diversifying our bookshelves or finding stories that offer representation, it’s all part of the same practice. Reading with intention helps us unlearn old narratives and discover new ones.

So next time you’re choosing what to read, take a page from Héctor’s book. Ask yourself: What do I need right now? Comfort, challenge, laughter, or a new perspective? Whatever it is, make it intentional. Your bookshelf and your worldview will thank you.
